Interview

In Depth Trailer research-World War Z

When researching trailers I tried to chose 3 very different trailers of which fell under different genres of film. A trailer is various short clips from the film of which come together to allow the target audience a small insight into what is expected from the movie and the rough story line of what it will follow.

The first trailer i researched was the blockbuster movie World War Z, staring Brad Pitt fighting for his survival in a world of which has been struck by a pandemic of zombies. The film made $66,411,358 in its first weekend when the film hit the USA cinemas, with the production company ,Paramount Pictures, allowing a budget of $190,000,000 to work on the film. Other Hollywood actors such as Mireille Enos and Daniella Kertesz starred alongside Brad in the film allowing them to become a more recognizable face on the silver screen.

The trailer is 2.27seconds long and includes things such as the film title, production companies and release date. The trailer starts off with the production companies flashing up to the loud noises of an aggressive alarm. Not only does this show that without the production company the making of this film would not be possible, hence they are at the start of the trailer, but it also awakens the viewer to what the film is or might be about. It then turns to what seems a stereotypical happy family car stuck in the bustle of the New York traffic. It consists of the two parents ,Gerry and Karin Lane, with there two small children sat in the back of the car playing a small guessing game to pass the time. It all seems happy and well until a middle aged man goes whizzing past their car in between the lines of traffic, taking out their wing mirror. This then initially creates a small shock between characters, making the audience jump and allow the audience to be alert. This then triggers the main character, Gerry, get out of the happy family car to find out what all the hustle and minimal motion is about. As he does this it connotes to the reader instantly how he is head of the family, and is the power participant within the characters of who we've seen so far. As Gerry is stood innocently by the side of his car in confusion, a male policeman weaves through the traffic in between the lines of traffic. While doing this, as he passes Gerry he aggressively screams at him to get back in car and to remain in it.  As he is screaming at Gerry to do just that, a massive truck comes and instantly kills him, taking at least a whole row of New York traffic with it. This then quickly adds to the initial shock and the viewer on the edge and very alert, allowing them to understand the seriousness of the incident, forcing them to be curious about whats going and whats causing this.

The trailer then switches to an ariel shot of the area which the family are in, showing thousands of panicking people running about like mad men. The view connotes how large of a scale this 'mystery incident' is, and the amount of people it has had an impact on causing havoc within the city. It then switches back to the family, who are within the big bustle of panic bouncing from person to person. Facial expressions are key within this shot as they connote to the viewer how scared the family is and how high running the emotions are between them. The dialogue then overtakes the shot, as the camera switches to Gerry who is jumping in an abandoned RV, carrying the family through the panic by being the powerful participant. As he smoothly whack the RV into drive, the camera is cut to the other side of the RV, of which the passenger seat window is smashed, causing Karin to scream. These shots are all placed very close together showing the high tempo of trailer at this point. It again quickly switches to various different high group of people running down the street in panic and despair. Once this shot is shown for half a second, it then switched back to Gerry for another half second aggressively driving down the road in order to save his family. At this point up flashes 'This Summer' very quickly, allowing the readers to be excited after the quick flash of mystery events, forcing them to be intrigued and wanting them not only to carry on watching the trailer but then also go out and watch the film. It then quick flashes back to the RV on a clear road, almost giving the sense of abandoned and loneliness for the Lane family, as the camera then changes back again to Gerry on the phone. The camera uses Gerry the most throughout the trailer so far showing that he is the powerful participant and that also he is the main character within the film. As he answers the phone the camera changes shot to two people sat in a helicopter mid air, as one of the males within the copter answers "Gerry". The camera then swaps back to Gerry as he confusingly asks "Terry, what is this?!"

Once the short phone call is over, a few shots of fighting, world wars, maps and terrorism flash across the screen within 3 seconds. This then allows the reader to understand the full extent of this mystery situation of which us as viewers still don't know what has caused this.Dialogue then cuts out the scene as it reads "Theres someone doing better than we are. This connotes to the reader how this then turns into a war, knowing that various people are fighting each other although us as viewers still don't know who they are. As this is being said a very high ariel shot of various different people fighting it out is being shown to the viewers, where bombs are being exploded and people are raiding various different territory. This again is also being shown to allow the viewer to fully understand the pandemic of what has happened and how it can be resolved. The scene then switched to this computer of which shows us the total population being killed due to this mysterious pandemic of which is still unknown to the viewers. With the numbers being astonishing it gives a deeper view into the mass impact it has had globally, creating confusion within the viewers into what this could be and how it could cause a large impact.

Potential Target Audience

Our potential target audience we are aiming for is teenagers, specifically around 13-19 but can also be suitable for 19+. The reasoning for this target audience is because our characters are going to be in their teens so our target audience can relate to these characters and what they are going through. Another reason for having this age as our target audience is that statistically teenagers are the mainly the audience for cinemas so spend money at theatres and when they go to the cinemas we know that our movie will have the upper hand on getting these teens money as our movie appeals mainly to them.

Longline Research

To research loglines...i looked at examples so i could get a rough idea of how to write mine for my film:
Example 1:Title: SWINE HEART HORRORWriters: Theresa Carey and Bruce BrochtrupGenre: Sci-Fi HorrorLogline: A mild-mannered Jewish doctor struggles with bizarre personality changes, unfamiliar slaughterhouse memories and increasingly violent episodes after receiving an emergency heart transplant of unknown origin.

Example 2:Title: Mo MushiWriter: Wade BarryGenre: DramedyLogline: Two gay men from San Francisco move to a small Wisconsin town to open a sushi dance club.

Example 3:Title: KeynoteWriter: Zach AsmanGenre: DramedyLogline: An Internet billionaire returns to his hometown to deliver the keynote speech at his old high school's graduation.

Example 4:Title: Two Can PlayWriter: Glen DelahaveGenre: Black ComedyLogline: After suspecting his wife is cheating, a bitter lawyer treats it like any other case and must begin an investigation to gather witnesses, obtain evidence and arrange for an extravagant dinner party at which to present his case to her family and friends.

From looking at examples i come to the conclusion that loglines are a brief summary of a film often providing both a synopsis of the films plot, this is to connect to the audience and stimulate the audiences interest in the film. Loglines can be a sentence long or a short paragraph, the reason for this is because they are enticing the audience to see their film where as if it was longer that might give away the story making the audience not want to see the movie because the element of surprise has been taken away!

Problems with filming outside

Filming outside is very risky, reason being is that we cant control the weather or the lighting. Therefore we might be filming and suddenly it will start to rain or it goes dark which is not part of our film. We have been checking the weather forecast constantly to see when would be a good time to film.

Our filming has been delayed as when we went to film outside a couple of weeks ago, it started to pour down with rain and this did not stop till a few hours later. This was a massive problem as we lost the natural light as it went dark outside, but because we had a schedule to keep we went ahead and filmed anyway. Although we didn't have the day light, you could clearly see the two young boys kicking a football about. After discussions and meetings whether to re-film we come to the conclusion that we really like this scene, and it fits in nicely with our trailer but because because we like it so we are going to keep it.

Production of evaluation Q.4

This is a short post on which explains the theory behind the production of my evaluation question 4 and why i decided to film it in this way. I wanted my evaluation question to be very free flowing, as we moved from each technological device. It allows the viewer to watch my evaluation question while digesting various information on the technological devices we used and what impact they had on our production. The production and filming of question 4 was fairly simple, as it allows you to see from a ravens wood media student perspective. As you follow the student around the media corridors you are forced upon you information  of which shows you the various and best technological devices. As you can see here on the right we had already scrap planned which technological devices we used and hand written how the production was affected by these. Once these had been hand written they were each enlarged and typed up onto each sheet of paper. This then easily allowed us to print these off and stick these around the corridors completing my free flowing effect.

Interview of Young Actors

Filming with Young Actors

Filming with the young actors was a very funny and pleasant experience. Although it consisted of various different bloopers and poor acting, the experience allowed us to express that we could work with various different age ranges allowing the story plot of our film to become more real. Finding the actors was easy, as we also feel that the actor on the left ,George Penn, has characteristics of Joey and the actor on the right ,James Penn, has characteristics of Danny. The interview of how the young actors found the experience is shorty following.

costume/clothing

There will be various different costumes and clothing used throughout the film, due to the different character personalities of which run through our film. The clothes used will not be over the top, and will just consist of basic fashionable clothes mixed in with the personality of the character wearing them. This then allows us to enhance the characters personalities through the use of costume and clothing. For example, Sophie comes across as a very delicate and soft girl meaning things such as flowers, pink and pretty things would come into her clothing. We have included various different items of clothing into each characters mood boards along with other influences. We have broken down each characters influential clothing's and divided them under each 3 main characters.

Sophie

Sophie's clothing is very stereotypical girly girl. This then connotes her sweet and innocent personality, allowing her to come across as soft and sensitive. Clothing and accessories play a huge part within trailers as it allows you to get first impressions throughout a small amount of time. This means the colors and clothing used connotes various different imitations to the viewer. This means Sophie is wearing various different pinks, purples in order to connote a very soft characteristic. We also see Sophie wearing various smart clothes in order to give her a sense of independence. This then allows us to play on the story line of her being a mature women in order to juxtaposition against Joey and Danny personalities.

Joey

Within joeys clothing you can clearly denote how Joey is trying to be as independent and mature as possible, but when with danny he is allowed to express himself through things such as snap backs and t shirts.  Through clothing we can clearly see the juxtaposition of personalities when with the two different characters. This is why we feel clothing's and accessories are a good way in which to express various different characters personalities.

Danny

Danny is dressed as how joey wants to be. With young styles and cool clothing, Danny is allowed to be the biggest kid he wants to be, with him constantly in things such as tracksuits, football gear and cool jackets. Danny has carried on from his childhood roots from when they was kids with loud t shirts and the latest trainers. There is a scene in our trailer in which Joey and Danny are getting ready for the 21st, Joey is putting on his shirt, blazer and checking his hair in the mirror, meanwhile danny is laid on the sofa behind in a tracksuit throwing a mini rugby ball around. We feel this is a good example of the juxtaposition within the two main characters clothing.

Treatment

A young man named Joey has been dating his girlfriend for over 3 years now since the young age of just 17. As Joeys 21st birthday is fast approaching, the couple are portrayed to be as happy as ever as Joey can slightly hear wedding bells ringing in the back of his ears. Joey is completely oblivious to Sophie's feelings towards Joey growing up and enjoying his life before marriage with his best mate Danny. The boys are famously known around the local area for causing trouble growing up throughout school and with the ladies, until Joey met Sophie. Sophie understands that Joey gets fed a lot of attention for girls around him, with his best mate Danny never helping the situations. Sophie's thoughts are eating her away inside day by day as the morning after Joeys 21rst 'Lads Night Out' she decides to act on it. Sophie has an ingenious idea of pretending to be a local good looking girl through the use of social networking sites to use temptation as a weapon against Joey to see if he would give in or stay faithful to his long term girlfriend. Sophie would then be glued to every laptop, smart phone and tablet she can find to allow her to access more of Joeys private life, of which him and Danny have kept under wraps for the duration of the relationship. As the film goes on Joey becomes more and more attached to this mystery women of which he has never met before and starts to have doubts within his own personal relationship. As the lie gets deeper and deeper Sophie finds it harder to reveal to him that she is the women hiding behind the technology as she starts to feel as if her own relationship is falling to pieces as she understand Joey now has other interests. The situation is resolved in a big reveal as joey decides to organize a meet with this 'Facebook Stalker' of whom he is initially attracted to and feels that he is starting to have feelings for. Sophie feels as if the time is right to tell the truth as she decides to go and meet her boyfriend on their 3 year anniversary with a different girls identity. The eagerly awaited moment for the reveal in a small coffee shop, of which him and sophie go every morning before work, is fast approaching as Joey awaits at a table nervously but also intrigued to learn more about this mystery girl. Various different comical twists are also thrown in through the use of main character Danny, creating the film into a romcom allowing a different view on the relationship.

Main Characters
Joey- Loveable character who endures long relationships with both main characters.

Danny- Joeys wingman, recently left single by Joey now causing havoc on his ones.

Sophie- Sweet innocent character who wouldn't hurt a fly, intruded by twisted thoughts on her personal relationship.

The film starts with what seems to be the sweet and perfect relationship between not just Joey and Sophie, but Joey and Danny. These two loveable characters are shown growing up together as they cause cheeky havoc across the town. Small details from their childhood are included from playing street football to kiss chase in the play ground back at school. Joey and Danny are 8 years old at this starting point in the film, as it allows us to experience them grow and flement with graciousness and standards as the years go. This will be on the screen for roughly the first 5 minutes of the film, as it needs some significance towards the storyline showing emotion between the two boys, but doesn't interfere too much with the main plot. This is where also a few laughs can be thrown into the film, allowing the film to start at a very easy flow with comical situations of which the young lads find themselves in. The start of the film then carries on  with the boys in their teens, of which see's the arrival of sophie early on in the film. The boys are still up to their usual tricks causing havoc around the local area, but in more adult situations such as nights out and at college. Joey and Sophie arent officially friends yet, as we see a juxtoposition in lifestyles, showing various different clips from eachothers daily lifestyle. Sophie is introduced as a sweet teenager who couldnt do no harm, as she is seen in the same college as Joey. We can clearly see from this shot the difference in personalities, of which leads into them initi0ally crossing paths. As Joey stumbles late into a lesson he is strictly ordered by the teacher to sit next to Sophie, of which shows her blushing at the thought. The strart of the film carries on showing how Joey and Sophies relationship flements, with Danny being a pest through comical situations.

The middle part of the film is where the build up begins towards the big reveal of the mystery identity behind the social networking girl. At first we see the initial party of which tips Sophie over the edge. We see a montage of the night which was famously planed by well known promoter and best mate danny, of which is made out to be this crazy and wild boys night. This leaves sophie alone with her thoughts, of which becomes twisted and over powering by doubt and nervousness which is funneled  through the sense of knowing it is Danny who has the power over Joey. This is when she has the ingenious idea of creating a fake account within another females identity. This would then allow her a broadened insight into Joeys life, allowing her to access various different areas of Joeys life him and Dany keep quiet. She decides to carry this idea through after consulting best mate Jessica over a coffee the next day, keeping in check her sanity. We then see interaction between the mystery facebook girl, who is named Lucy Watson, as they start to build relationships between eachother. This is where the main storyline starts to kick in, as the story starts to unveil itself, although this is still not clear to the viewers or characters Joey and Danny. As Joey is completely oblivious to this he starts to spend more time on his phone, which is becoming recognizable to real life girlfriend Sophie. This forces them to drift apart over the duration of the film of which becomes recognizable to the viewers. This all adds to the build up of tension between the viewers due to the build up of tension between the characters.

The film finshes with the release of tension and the reveal of the mystery girl to the audience. This is revealed due to sophies concious caving in forcing her to reveal her own identity to Joey, of whom he thinks shes someone else. The twisted tale finnaly resolves ass confusion is settled while shock occurs to the audience.

Casting Profiles-George Penn

George is James' brother, of whom plays the miniature Joey within the short montage at the start of the trailer. George is 8 years old and is a very loud character of which allows us to express the major differences in Joeys personality from when he was young and free with Danny to now, when he is more mature and in a relationship. Similar to James, George doesn't play a major part in the filming of the trailer. Although both the boys had fun, there impact was bigger on the audience than on the length and film of the trailer. Interviews from both young actors will be posted shortly.

Tuesday 28 January 2014

Casting Profile-James Penn

James is 9 years old, and plays the role of Danny within the montage showing the two boys, Joey and Danny, when they were young them selfs. James doesn't play a major role in the making of the trailer although still has the ability to have an impact on the audience due to him being able to express how close the boys really used to be. This is shown through a quick 10 second montage of what the boys used to get up to, as they roam the streets and each others houses with minimal worries. James is a young bubbly lad as he enjoys to play football, read books and play computer games.
